Test Drive 005
Here is our Fifth Test Drive Meme! There are a lot of areas of the city to explore, so please have a look around! In case you need a little help getting started, I've included a few prompts below, or feel free to start your own! Exploration and player initiative are the names of the game here!
Arrival & General Information | Setting & Bestiary | Locales & Businesses | Residences & Housing Info | Rules & FAQ (ask questions here!)
I. Crash Into MeNot exactly, but close enough. You have just arrived and received a strange satchel from a tiny, strange little man and are left more or less to your own devices (more information on what to expect upon arrival can be found here)! Follow directions to the north and check out the housing, or maybe have a look around the Historium and try to get some information from that giant glowing ball, see what you can waste your meager starter coin on in the Market District, or maybe just meet the neighbors.II. What Goes Bump in the Night
It looks like Aterat proper has a spirit problem. Maybe you're seeing specters, hearing disembodied voices, your windows rattle when there's no breeze outside. Maybe there are cold spots in your place of business (or your apartment, which is so much worse). Either way, you're 100% convinced you're haunted. Hopefully, someone else believes you, or maybe you're used to feeling crazy.III. A Mean, Green Mother from where now?
There's a pollen problem in the city, and by that we mean it's everywhere. Yellowish green pollen seems to be caked-on everything with the misfortune of being outside, whether it's windows, banisters, carts, you name it. If it's outside for a duration of time, it's a free game to have a layer of dust settled upon it, and it plays havoc on anyone who breathes it in. Allergic to pollen? Your allergies are horrible. Not allergic, well, you might just have the sniffles anyway, and another problem. You seem to be completely unable to tell a lie. Not only that, but you feel the overwhelming need to tell people things you'd usually keep to yourself. Maybe you like to put cream in your coca-cola (you monster) or maybe you've done something terrible and you really need to get it off your chest either in person or over the network.IV. Try the Network
The Tell-Phone allows for text, video, and audio transmissions to everyone else who has one. Give it a whirl!V. Wildcard
The above prompts are all options, and there's much more to the setting than what they provide. Do your best (or your worst)!
Sounds good!
It wasn't as if he was expecting a child to follow him.
He kept his senses alert but otherwise continued on his way. His pursuer wasn't doing anything so Jacob assumed that it was likely harmless but he had grown to be cautious over the last year.
It turned out to be a good thing because Jacob was ready and waiting for the sudden calamity. His palms shot out and he grabbed Mono under the shoulders, lifting the flailing boy to his feet. "I got you." He spoke with a smile as he gently placed the boy back onto solid ground. "There you go. You okay?"
It was weird that he had a bag on his head but that wasn't Jacob's immediate concern.
Excellent /o/
Adjusting the bag, he peered through the holes at Jacob curiously. “Um, I’m okay. Thanks Mr… Sorry, I didn’t mean to fall in front of you like that.”
no subject
"It's fine. As long as you're alright. I didn't mean to startle you. Are you in a hurry somewhere?"
He really wanted to ask about the bag but the kid was skittish enough with him prodding.
no subject
He shrugged his shoulders in a little gesture. “Kinda? I was trying to get across the street and I didn’t see the cart coming ‘cause I was focused on not losing sight of-“ Well, Jacob. But... People didn’t always like to find out someone had been following them around. “Of... Of a cat I saw.”
Cats were common enough around the city, right? Surely there was one or two nearby. Yeah. That worked.
no subject
"How about I help you look for it? Did it run away?" He assumed that the cat was his and that it had somehow escaped.
"Oh. You can call me Jacob or Jake if you like nicknames." Kids like nicknames right?
no subject
It’s a work in progress.
With a lot of obstacles.
“Umm...” He fussed with a loose button on his jacket. “No, I don’t think it got far.” Mono responded with an awkward glance at Jacob. “But I can find it later. I’m good at finding stuff.” At least when he set his mind to it, “Jacob or Jake? ... Okay. I’m Mono. Just Mono, I only got one name.”
no subject
His eyebrow rose in an elegant arc. "You sure? I'm probably not as good at finding things but I can probably cat it." He was severely underestimating how troublesome a cat could be.
"Mono. Cool name. Have you ever wanted a nickname? I have an older sister so nicknames happen a lot." Sometimes to insult each other.
no subject
Which wasn’t a bad thing. It reminded him of a friend from his world.
Mono shook his head so quickly that his hair audibly rustled against the paper bag. “I’m sure! It’s probably got cat stuff to do, going to cat places and seeing other cats.” He was rambling a bit, because he wasn’t sure he wanted to explain Jacob was the cat.
The child shrugged a little. “I dunno. Are nicknames good? Do people normally get them?” he was still getting used to hearing people use his name more, adults didn’t really... talk where he was from.
no subject
"Yeah. You can get nicknames from friends or people you're close to. My good friends used to call me Jake or JC." Most of his nicknames came from high school and not all were appropriate for children but his two most common nicknames were innocent enough.
"Do you want a nickname? I bet I could come up with one, though I'd likely do with the paper bag." Since that was all he really knew about Mono. "Most of the time nicknames come from a trait or something about you." Jacob paused and then continued with an example. "Like, Jake comes from Jacob and JC is because my middle name is Cory."
He hoped that he wasn't making this too complicated.
no subject
“I guess a nickname could be kinda neat. I don’t always wear the bag, though. Just sometimes, at least here.” Back in his world was different. It was necessary. Here... People were nice, and they kept saying his face was okay... So he only wore it when he felt like he needed it now.
no subject
"How about lil shadow as your first nickname. I think it suits you pretty well." Then he'd have a nickname.
no subject
“I guess that makes sense. I’m really sneaky and shadows are good for hiding.” Yes, he hadn’t quite clued in that he had at least admitted to being prone to sneaking. There was no way Jacob didn’t realize Mono was the one following him before now.
no subject
"Good. I'll call you lil' shadow from now on." It was a cute nickname for a cute kid.
no subject
There were a few he avoided... Just because he wasn't one hundred percent sure of them, and from a distance they looked like or reminded him of people he'd known in his world... But otherwise, it was great here. "Okay, neat. Now I got a nickname, that's another new thing." He might have been smiling under the paper bag, not that anyone could see it.
But it was implied in his tone. "Thank you!"
no subject
"I need to get to the carpentry shop. If you ever need help finding that cat of yours, that's where I'll be." He was going to tussle the kid's bag as a sign of affection but he remembered how he had reacted before and decided against it. Instead, he lifted his hand in an innocent goodbye.
"I'll see you around lil' shade."
no subject
But the carpentry shop was a place he knew pretty well by now, “Okay! Um… I’ll probably see you there. I sometimes deliver messages from there to customers who have stuff waiting to be picked up.” He explained, waving a little in that direction. Tommy didn’t have him delivering heavy stuff, but he was a pretty good message carrier. It was a good job for a kid who tended to run around the city anyway, and it meant he could afford things in a place where one had to pay for what they needed.
That Jake had already gotten a sense of how Mono reacted to being touched was a good thing. The child was still trying to get used to such things… and he’d had some awkward situations already.
At the goodbye, Mono realized that, like many adults, Jake had stuff to do. “Bye! I’ll remember, but I think I’ll see the cat around again sometime soon, anyway!” Because he intended to follow Jake around again sometime, as he tended to with everyone who caught his interest.
